Mr. Mark Totan
Born in 1953, Mr. Totan is a federally registered Inuk
Master Carver and is from the small town of Igloolik located on Baffin
Island in the territory of Nunavut on the north shore of Hudson's Bay.
Mr. Totan was a catskinner on the Dewline in Hull Beach before
he took up soapstone carving. Each carving is original and depicts
the spirituality, history, heritage, symbols, lifestyle and talent of Canada's
native people. Traditionally, the art form has been handed down from
the older master carver to the younger members of the family
and therefore carried on through the generations.
Mr. Totan is a Master Carver who, using traditional carving methods,
has been carving original sculptures in soapstone since 1988. When
asked to carve a particular image, he has often said that the stone
decides what it will be. Mark carves the sprit animals he walks with
in his dreams and vision quests, each piece being a unique embodiment
of a spiritual experience.
The carvings of Mark Totan can be sculpted in soapstone from around
the world including Canadian, South and North American, Chinese and
East Indian. Including British Colombia Sepentine which results in
amazingly striking black sculptures and Lava rock which results in some
very unique pieces. All having individual characteristics depending
on the geographical region of origin.
Once the stone has shown what sprit it will hold, Mark will initially
rough out the block of carving stone with hammer and chisel by
traditional methods. He then uses files, rasps and sandpaper for final
finishing. The final touch may consist of rubbing with liquid acrylic
or Danish oil to bring out the natural finish of the stone. The stone
may also vary in colour and markings from shades of black and brown to
various shades of green as well as shades from cream to pure white.
Soapstone is characterized by its softness and luster.
The purity of the creation along with the love and time given by this
Master Carver make for genuine fine art pieces that art collectors
worldwide are proud to have in their collection. Always deeply cherished
and emotionally invoking to the ones that are fortunate enough to
possess a piece or be in their presence.
Mr. Totan’s carvings have been sold to exclusive private collectors
worldwide and are also displayed around the world, including Germany,
Sweden, England, the U.S.A. and of course Canada.
Mr. Mark Totan is currently exclusively represented
